Candles add an important essence to your home. Aside from transforming your home and giving your space an alluring scent, it is an essential part of a self-care routine. The candle's scent is a powerful stimulant for mental well-being. But do you know what’s in these candles? Are they helpful as you think they are?
To begin with, traditional candles are made from Paraffin Wax, but Soy Candles are now gaining steam. These two types of candles are not very different from each other but there are a number of distinctions in which soy candles can be advantageous. It can be hard to let go of the traditional way but we’ve come up with a list why the “Out with the old and in with the new” also applies to candles.
1. Natural & Environmentally- Friendly
The traditional Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum - a nonrenewable source that contains carcinogens and other chemicals. Soy wax on the other hand, is made from vegetable oil which is natural and renewable. Soy wax does not release carbon dioxide and doesn’t have chemicals added to them. This is important especially for people who have kids and pets because it is the safest option health-wise.
2. Cleaner, Healthier Burn
Since Soy wax is made from natural materials, it delivers a cleaner burn compared to Paraffin wax. Paraffin wax when burned, releases soot which can stay on walls, or any furniture at your home. Aside from unsightly soot, the carcinogens released by Paraffin wax may cause headaches for some. Some people may mistake that the scent gives them a headache, but it is actually the chemical fumes. Soy candles on the other hand, burn clean with almost no soot at all.
3. Safer At Home
Because Paraffin wax has large, defined crystal structure, it has a higher melting point compared to Soy wax. Having a lower melting point lowers the risk of getting burned when the wax accidentally spills onto skin. Soy wax is softer and more pliable compared to Paraffin wax and if the wax spills, it can easily be cleaned by soap and water.
4. Longer lasting
Since Soy candles have a lower melting point, it burns 30-50 percent longer than a Paraffin candle. It is easier to burn in cooler environments or during cooler seasons. However, it burns fast if you live in a very hot area. The trick is, do not burn the candle for more than 4 hours as this can cause the wax to overheat. Keep the candle away from drafts and if the wick moves, recenter it to reuse the wax. While Soy candles may be more expensive than Paraffin candles, you are actually getting your money’s worth and you don't need to buy soy candles as often.
5. Better Scent
Since there are no chemicals added, soy wax candles have a stronger scent compared to Paraffin wax candles. The chemicals on Paraffin wax candles only interfere with the scent during burning. With Soy candles, there is a great surface area of liquid wax pooling around the candlewick once it is lit, this is where the essential oils are being released. The clean burn of Soy wax shows off the aroma of the candle.
There are many reasons why you should go with Soy candles instead of Paraffin Candles. From its health benefits to better scents, you can never go wrong with Soy Candles.
